Just last month (July) on the 18th, the new album titled “It’s All Fun And Games” from Junior Sisk was released and I have enjoyed listening to it many times. Over the years, fans have grown accustomed to the true traditional bluegrass sound from Junior Sisk. His roots run very deep in the history of bluegrass.
As a multi-award winner, Junior Sisk created another well-crafted album, “It’s All Fun And Games”. The talent of all the band members shines throughout the entire album. The instrumentation greatly contributes to the emotional atmosphere of each song. Joining the voice of Junior Sisk with the “mountain clear voice”, as described by Miss Dixie Hall, Heather Berry-Mabe creates a harmony that is smooth and satisfying.
The title track “It’s All Fun And Games” was written by Harry C Sisk, Sr, David Stewart, and Jerry Salley. This song definitely tells the theme of the album. “Still Be Blue” demonstrates the great harmonies while giving the fans that typical bluegrass song about feeling blue after getting out of a relationship. “The Last Time Again” is that song about the many attempts of leaving a relationship but coming back like many do. We all have been on one side or the other of being that fool in a relationship and you can revisit the good or bad memories through the up-beat song “Go Back You Fool”.
Bob Minner and Frank Ray wrote an awesome song, “Sweeter Than Tupelo Honey”, that takes you through the journey of a young boy that grew up in a small farm-type area and how he later realizes that he was always where he should have been. The song definitely paints a picture and allows you to visualize the journey.
Need a quick paced gospel song – you don’t have to look any further, just turn up the volume for the Junior Sisk version of the Hank Williams song “The Devil’s Train”. This song had me singing along and I truly love the message of how one tries to stop the train of going through life making bad decisions.
While most of the album is songs about relationships, love, leaving, take advice (or not) from friends, or a not so lucky marriage, it does have a fun song that may catch you off guard. “Weather Woman” is a very fun and catchy song. The creativity of the wording and instrumentation together will have you thinking of your weather person, laughing, and tapping your toes all at the same time.
I know I haven’t spoken about every song on the album, but it is an album that you will like in its entirety. And, if you ever get the chance to see them live, like we have just recently, Junior Sisk and his band members (Heather Berry-Mabe, Johnathan Dillion, Curt Love and Tony Mabe) deliver these songs perfectly and put on a great show.
As mentioned in the beginning, “It’s All Fun And Games” is already out on all streaming stations and you can buy the CD if you get the chance to catch them at a live event near you. You can also purchase merch and CD’s off their website at www.juniorsisk.com .
